Surfing in the Bondi Region

The coastline around the Bondi region offers a variety of surf conditions year round across several beaches—from sheltered, beginner-friendly breaks to more powerful waves. Bondi and surrounding beaches are best suited to south, south-east, and east swells, especially when paired with offshore westerly or north-westerly winds.

Conditions can change quickly and vary throughout the day, so always follow lifeguard signage and be respectful and aware of others when in the water.

Surf Breaks

North Bondi Beach

North Bondi is generally the most sheltered part of the Bondi Beach. It is popular with beginners, surf schools, and longboarders, especially on smaller days. Waves here tend to be softer and more rolling. Crowds are common, so surf awareness and etiquette are important.

Middle Bondi Beach

The middle section of Bondi Beach has a constantly changing beach break. Waves change as the sand shifts and tides change. This part of the beach can offer a variety of waves for surfers of all abilities depending on the swells size and sand banks.

South Bondi Beach (Icebergs / Backpackers)

South Bondi is typically the most powerful end of Bondi Beach. Waves here are steeper and faster and are better suited to more experienced surfers particularly on larger swells. Strong rips are common on this part of the beach; extra caution is advised when surfing here.

Mackenzies Bay

Mackenzies Bay is a transient beach just north of Tamarama. The sand here comes and goes depending on swell, tides, and weather conditions. It can sometimes form a small sandy cove; other times it is rocky or covered by water. When conditions are right, a lefthand wave can form off the northern headland. This area has strong currents, underwater rocks, and limited access points, making it suited to only experienced surfers.

Tamarama Beach

Tamarama is the smallest beach in the region. Waves often break close to the rocks, with both lefts and rights. Strong currents can make this beach hazardous, particularly in larger conditions.

Bronte Beach

Bronte offers a mix of waves with beach and reef breaks, with the southern end of the beach producing the waves off the rocks near the Bronte Baths. The beach can be steep and shore break is common.

Surf Lessons and Equipment Hire

Whether you are a first-timer or looking to improve your technique, Bondi has a range of surf schools and hire options:

  • Surf Schools: Beginner lessons are available at Bondi. Most schools provide boards, wetsuits, and certified instructors. Popular providers include Let’s Go Surfing Bondi, and Waves Surf School.
  • Board Hire: Surfboards, bodyboards, and wetsuits can be hired from local shops along Bondi Beach. Many shops or mobile stalls also offer short-term board hire without lessons.
  • Tips for First Timers: Take a lesson with a certified instructor, start on smaller waves, and always follow lifeguard guidance.
  • Surf Etiquette: If you’re heading out, always check lifeguard signage for swimming only areas and where to surf. Check out the Local Etiquette & Safety page for more information.
