Bates Milk Bar

Who else misses the iconic milk bar? Every time we walk past the corner of Campbell Parade and Hall Street we start salivating for an old fashioned vanilla malted milkshake.

Opened in 1951 by brothers George and Nick Bates (anglicised from the Greek name Bagiatis), Bates Milk Bar closed 50 years later in 2001. At the time it had the distinction of being Bondi Beach’s longest trading shop.

Many of those lovely old fixtures and fittings have been sent to the Powerhouse Museum for preservation.
