Your guide to local etiquette & safety tips
To make the most of your visit to the Bondi region, follow these simple guidelines for a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
Beach safety
- Always swim between the red and yellow flags—these areas are patrolled by lifeguards, and conditions outside them can be dangerous.
- Be aware of strong rips at Bondi, Tamarama, and Bronte. If in doubt, ask a lifeguard before entering the water.
- Surfboards and bodyboards are only allowed in designated areas.
- Follow lifeguard instructions—they’re there to keep you safe.
Surfing etiquette
- Surf outside the flags.
- Wait your turn and respect other surfers in the water—don’t drop in on someone else’s wave.
- Keep a safe distance from other surfers—the one closest to the peak has right of way.
- Beginners should stick to designated learner areas and give way to more experienced surfers.
Respect the local community
- Bondi is a residential area—keep noise levels down at night and respect private property.
- Late-night parties on the beach are not permitted. Alcohol consumption is also prohibited in public areas, including Bondi Beach.
Cyclist courtesy
- Cyclists should stay to bike paths where available, and be mindful of pedestrians, especially on the Bondi promenade, which can be crowded.
- Bike parking is available along the beachfront and at Bondi Junction.
Leave no trace
- No alcohol or glass as all beaches are alcohol-free zones.
- Help keep Bondi beautiful—dispose of waste properly, recycle, and avoid single-use plastics.
- Don’t feed wildlife, including seagulls, as it disrupts the local ecosystem.
